The Rath Yatra here concluded peacefully on Thursday with a ban on obscene utterances during the festival and for the first time women pulling Lord Jagannath’s chariot.

Hundreds of women devotees along with their male counterparts pulled the chariot creating history in the district. Expressing pleasure over the event, District Collector Sibabrata Dash said that prior to this year women had found it difficult to even come near the ropes of the chariot, but after the ban on hurling of obscenities women could pull the chariot. This reflects the rich and distinct cultural heritage of Nabarangpur, he observed.
President of Durgabhaini Sussma Jain, along with the Rising Star Rotarians participated in chariot-pulling and cheered women devotees. They said they were thankful to the district administration for the new trend, which, they hoped, would be continued in future.
In particular, tribal women were thrilled to participate in the pulling of the chariot.The district administration deployed huge number police personnel of both genders for smooth and peaceful conduct of the festival.
