Nabarangpur District Bar Association Picnic Organised at Podagada.

The district bar association with the bar members of Umerkote, Raighar, Chandahnadi,  Jharigam, Dabugam, Kodinga, organized a picnic at Podagada on Sunday. For the first time such types of picnic was held with the efforts of the president of the district bar association Narasingo Tripathy, which was appreciated by all the bar members with judges.

 For the first time in the history of Nabarangpur association organised a grand picnic with collaboration with the Umerkote Bar Association. 
 
 

Podagada is a historic spot situated 52 Kms. away from Nabarangpur district headquarter and 14 Kms. from Dhodra where Brahmi inscriptions are found. Podagada is rich in Lapidary inscription, sculptures, ruined forts, temple and coins. Stone inscription, found here depict that Puskari was the capital of Nala dynasty from the 4th to 5th century.




It is in Umerkote Tahesil of Nabarangpur district. Four inscriptions, two on stones tell us a lot about their history.The copper plate inscription are Rithapur plates of King Bhavadatta Verman and the Keshari Bedha plates of King Arthapati. The rise of the Nalas posed a great challenge to the power of the Vakataka monarchs and a clash between powers became inevitable.

The temporary eclipse of Nala power has been referred to the podagada stone inscription of Nabarangpur district, from where it was known that the lost glory and prestige of Nala Dynisty was retrieved by ScandaVerman, after defeating the Vatakas. Soon after the Nalas were completely defeted and crushed by Chalukya Kirtiverman.

In 1939, 32 gold coins belonging to the kings Varaharaja, Arthapatiraja and Bhavadutta Verman were discovered. The coins contained figures of Nala Legends are popularly known as the “Box-Headed” type. In May 1957, 28 gold coins were discovered from the forest of Kodinga Teshil of Nabarangpur district.

   History tells us that originally the place was under the Nalas, and sub-sequently went to the possession of Nagas. The gold coins which were discovered have opened a new field of research so far as the Nagas are concerned. 

 

The ruin Queen palace, Virabi Temple, Madagam Dongori, Bhai Bhauni, Nandegada, Gumphas Punji, Belghari, Tengapani, and Jogikupaa are places of historic importance.

The sun and moon statue till today says about the art, culture, and civilization of Nala Dynast. Podaagada has immense potential for tourism.
