The Indian Youth Congress (IYC) launched a twenty-day pre-membership awareness drive for the State at the Congress Bhawan here on Sunday. AICC secretary and Odisha in-charge Mirza Irshad Baig, IYC secretary Mohd Shahnawaz Choudhury and Pradesh Youth Congress (PYC) president Pradip Majhi (MP) jointly inaugurated the programme. The drive will be followed by a month-long membership enrollment campaign.
Irshad Baig told newsmen at the Pradesh Congress Committee headquarters that AICC will extend full patronage to the IYC team, now in Odisha, in the membership drive and instructed the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) and all the Districts Congress Committees (DCC) to extend their full cooperation to the IYC members during the process.
Baig said the IYC is going to conduct organisational elections in the State soon after the membership drive. As to eligibility for membership and participation in the elections he laid the age limit between 18 and 35 years. Youth believing in secular ideology and with clean image can become members and contest the elections for any post.
Mohd. Shahnawaz said AICC General secretary Rahul Gandhi belived that leadership should not be imposed on the youth, rather they must choose their leaders in a democratic manner.
OPYC president Majhi appealed to the youth of Odisha to join the Youth Congress and contribute to the progress of the country.
Among others, Pradesh Congress Committee(PCC) spokesperson Kailash Acharya, IYC zonal co-ordinator Iftikar Ahemad and Pankaj Basotra were also present.

The BJD had launched a frontal attack on the Centre on the petroleum price issue by burning effigies of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi.
On the other hand, it issued an order on May 3, 2011, for imposition of VAT on sugar and textile and asked for collection of 4 per cent VAT with effect from April 8, 2011.
The government officials said after the Centre had abolished the excise duty in lieu of sales tax, the Orissa government imposed VAT of 4 per cent. “As a state share, we used to get Rs 270 crore to Rs 300 crore from the Centre towards tax from sugar and textile. After abolition of the excise tax if we don’t impose the tax, the state will lose huge money. The state cannot afford to bear the loss,” said an Orissa government official.
However, the officials agreed that because of imposition of the VAT, the consumer are now paying Rs 2 more on 1kg of sugar. The all Odisha textile and sugar, dealers (Wholesale & Retail) has opposed the imposition of VAT on sugar and textile in Orissa. Mr. Sushil Jain, one of the executive Member of the dealers said that “Traders across the state will keep their shutters down on May 24 and 25 as a mark of protest.

Ruling Biju Janata dal, took to the streets protesting against hike in petrol prices and demanded immediate roll back. The BJD activists organized rallies and demonstration, blocked the NH-201, in Nabarangpur town area here shouting slogans against the Centre.
Claiming that the price of petrol had been raised nine times during the last nine months, the protesters said it would put enormous financial burden on common people.
Monohar Randhari, MLA, critisised the price hike and said Congress had betroyed the people. The hike will result in rise in prices of essential commodities.The UPA government must announce a subsidy and take steps to control prices of petroleum products, he demanded.

Congress MP Pradeep Majhi asked 501 Questions in 2 Years.

While the UPA government is all set to complete two years, Congress MP from Nabarangpur in Odisha, Pradeep Majhi has set a new record. The first-timer Lok Sabha MP asked 501 questions in two years.
A study by Hush Puppies revealed that the people of India elected 61 MPs in the 25-40 age group, to the 15th Lok Sabha in May 2009. Who form over 11 per cent of the total strength of the house. Going by the statistics of their attendance in the house, the number of questions they asked, the debates they participated in, and the private member’s bills they introduced, their performance has been clearly below average.
Ironically, Rahul Gandhi, who is considered as the youth icon in the country, neither participated in any Parliamentary debate nor asked any question. His attendance was a meagre 47 per cent. His busy and hectic schedule across the country did not help him to focus on Parliamentary proceedings.
Pradeep Majhi, who hails from Odisha's tribal district - Nabarangpur, took part in five debates with an attendance rate of 66 percent. He asked 501 questions - a record in 15th Lok Sabha so far. He focuses on social issues, tribal development, human rights issue and infrastructure development. His campaigns against the Vedanta Mining Project in Niyamgiri Hills and MGNREGS scam in Nabarangpur, earned him accolades.
As the MP from Nabarangpur, a predominantly tribal area, he has taken up tribal rights issues both inside and outside Parliament. In the recent Budget session, Majhi took up the issue of the demand of the Konda Reddy community of Orissa to be recognised as a scheduled tribe. “It is strange that the community should have ST status just across the border in Andhra Pradesh and despite being a primitive tribe, continue to wait for it in Orissa,” he says. According to Majhi, not meeting the demand is one of the reasons for a large number of youth from this tribe becoming Naxalites.
Majhi played an important role in bringing to focus the opposition of the tribal communities to the Vedanta mining project in Niyamgiri Hills. Indiscriminate mining is an issue that he has been campaigning against, and was looking forward to participating in a discussion on it scheduled towards the end of the Budget session this year. Majhi had even managed to get himself listed as the third speaker on the issue. However, the house adjourned after some disruption, and the discussion did not happen. “It was very disappointing for me,”hesays.
Majhi uses zero hour to raise issues in Orissa because, he says, “there are only two or three people who do it”. He admits that his attendance in the Lok Sabha took a hit because of the organisational elections of the Youth Congress of which he is the president in Orissa. “The last session was anyway washed out. I have tried to make up for the loss in the Budget session,” he says.
Pradeep Majhi currently holds the post of Orissa Pradesh Youth Congress President. It's heartening to see that despite holding such an important post, Mr. Majhi managed to discharge his duties as a Lok Sabha MP whenever he got a chance.

N’rangpur cops caught taking bribe
A Vigilance case was registered against Akhaya Kumar Raul, SI of Police in-charge, Maidalpur outpost in Nabarangpur district, for demand of an illegal gratification of `5,000 from Nityananda Gauda of Dahadamal under Papadahandi PS to compromise a dispute. A trap was laid on Sunday by Vigilance officers. On Raul’s direction, Gauda handed over the brine money to Nila Bisoi, Constable of the outpost. Bisoi, seeing the Vigilance team, ran away from the spot. After a long chase, he was caught by the Vigilance personnel, but on search the bribe amount could not be recovered from him. However, his hand and pant pocket wash gave positive chemical reaction confirming acceptance of bribe. Both Raul and Bisoi were arrested.

Commissioner for Persons with Disability, visited.
Commissioner for persons with disability visited, Nabarangpur on Friday. A meeting was organized at the Rajiv Bhawan, of DRDA. Details of programme and schemes of the government for the persons with disability, was were discussed at the meeting.
Collector, Mr.Sibabrata Dash, presided over the meeting, attracted the commissioner that with in the district, Mega Health Camp was organized by the district administration, NRHM and DHH.A stall was allotted to DDRC to providing therapeutic services, physiotherapy, Occupational therapy, Psychological assessment to M.R hearing assessment of hearing handicapped persons and counseling and guidance to visually impaired persons and there 217 beneficiaries were benefited from the camp, he said. Also organized single window camps for persons with disabilities in eight blocks so far.
Due to non availability, physiotherapy, Occupational therapy this district fail to give disabilities certificates in time he added. CDPOs, Supervisors, including a persons with disabilities of district participated in the meeting and try-cycles were distributed

The Marwadi samaj of district organized 50th Birthday celebrations of Acharya Mahashraman held at Shastri Bhawan here recently. Swadhivi Dr.Kundan rekhaji was the chief guest described the life and teachings of Acharya.
The noble soul and great thinker was borned in 1962 at Sardarsahar, a small town in Rajasthan. At the age of 12 years he became a monk. Under the able guidance of Acharya Tulsi and Acharya Shri Mahapragya, he got his education and proved himself as an ardent disciple. He possesses the qualities of a Scholar, writer, brilliant speaker, meditator and impressionable personality. He also guides the Youth wings of Terapanth morally and emotionally.
Due to extraordinary characteristics Muni Mudit leaded many old monks in the Terapanth sect and became Mahashraman at the age of 28 years. He is like a gem with broad scientific and rational outlook. In 1997 at the age of 35 years he became the “Yuvacharya” successor designate to the present Acharya. He became Acharya on 9th May 2010 after the Mahaprayan of His Holiness Acharya Shri Mahapragya. Padabhishek was held at Sardarshahar on 23rd May 2010.
Suresh Jain, President of Odisha Jain Swatember Terapanth sabha, Swabhagya Sriji, Primal Sriji, and Kalyani yeshaji, participated in the meeting. ATMA General Body Meeting held.

The Agricultural Technology Management Agency (ATMA) new committee general body meeting was held at Ashok Meheta Conference Hall, here on Wednesday. Collector and Chairman of ATMA, Sibabrata Dash was the chief guest while, DDA, Brahamarbara Sahu, ADFO,CDVO, DDM, NABARD,Horticulturist, Convener and Chairman, of BFIC, newly nominated members were present at the meeting. A details annual action plan for the district was prepared. The members stressed on awareness campaign, farmers training, exposure visit of farmers, to facilitate transfer of new technology from laboratories to the farms would be brought. Mr. Dash, said that the farmers need to be sensitised and encouraged to make a shift from the traditional to scientific farming. He attributed the low farm production of the district due to low irrigation facility, so top priority for irrigation will be given. He further emphasize to setup Four numbers of farm school will be set-up in each block, and Gramya Krusuka Mancha in each revenue village, and the Krusaka Sathi, should enthusiastically work with Krusaka Club formed by NABARD.

Journalists Participated In Lawyers indefinite strike.
Members of the Nabarangpur Bar Association launched an indefinite cease-work from 29th April demanding establishment of district and sessions judge court for their district in Nabarangpur town. The lawyers are on relay dharna in front of the sub collector office.
The members of the district journalists action committee,(DJAC) extended their support and participated in the dharana, here on Wednesday. It may be mention here that the DJAC, submitted a memorandum and discussed with the Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, for the all round development of the district, in which establishment of district court, is one of the demand. Lawyer’s are on Indefinite strike Demands Dist.Judge Court at Nabarangpur
Judicial work in Nabarangpur district has been hit for the last 12 days with the lawyers resorting to indefinite relay strike in front of the Sub-Collector, Office, demanding district and sessions judge court for the district.
After Nabarangpur was carved out as a new district in 1992, the state government has made repeated commitments to sanction a district and sessions court for the district.
Despite the fact that in Feb 2010 during the visit of the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, and law minister, Bikram Araku, announced in a public meeting here for the establishment of district judge court at Nabarangpur soon. Now the assurance seems to be unfilled.
But nothing has been done so far despite a series of announcements and commitments. Land was not a constraint for building the infrastructure. The additional district court here is in possession of surplus land for the establishment of a district and sessions court, said Bar association president, Mr.Uma Sankar Tripathy. We will be forced to resort to ceasework and other means of agitation if the government does not make any announcement in this regard soon.
However, 18 years on, the repeated pleas with the Government to establish a District Judge Court here has fallen on deaf ears and the court in functioning in Koraput due to which the people and the litigants are suffering from great deal of hardship and their grievances have not been redressed. As per the government notification, six new judgeships were supposed to be created in the state. But the judgeship in Nabarangpur was excluded from the list. The judicial courts here are now under the administrative jurisdiction of Koraput district and sessions court.
“Even after 12 days of strike, none from the Law Department or the State Government has come forward to discuss our problems,” Secretary, District Bar association, Raghunath Padhy, adding, we are being forced to intensify our strike. Several organizations extended their support. Nabarangpur MLA, Monahor Randhari, Former MP, Parshuram Majhi, Zilla parisad, vice chairperson, Manjula Majhi, came to the demo place and discussed with the lawyers and said that the demand is a genuine one.
In the meanwhile on Tuesday, a team of the bar association, headed by presient, Umatripathy, secretary, Raghunath Padhy, Narasingha Tripathy, bar council member, Bishnu Patro, rushed to Cuttack, to apprise the matter before the Chief justice, high court, and law department.

As Governor MC Bhandare will be out of Odisha for more than a week, the much awaited reshuffle of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s Hat-Trick Cabinet, is being expected by May 10 to 11.The Governor is leaving Odisha in second week of this month and will back in a week, reshuffle might took place by May 10 or 11, sources having knowledge on ruling BJD’s political affairs said on Saturday.
Sources said, both Chief Minister Patnaik and his advisor MP Pyari Mohapatra have jointly discussed the new list of Ministers. “The list has been finalised while date for reshuffle is yet to come,” highly placed sources in BJD said.Both Patnaik and Mohapatra till now are maintaining tight-lipped fearing an internal fight within the BJD.
Sources said that senior Ministers might survive while few young Ministers might face the ire of the Big Boss this time. Many senior BJD MLAs are also eyeing for Ministerial berth.

BJD youth wing wants PM to quit

After the parliament's public accounts committee indicted the Prime Minister in the 2G spectrum scam, the Biju Yuva Janata Dal, youth arm of the ruling BJD, on Thursday demanded Manmohan Singh's scalp.
"Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has lost his moral right to continue in the chair. He should immediately resign and allow an impartial probe by the CBI," BYJD convenor Sanjay Dasburma told a media conference here. He announced that the BYJD would hold demonstrations, starting in front of the Raj Bhavan and subsequently in the district headquarters, demanding Singh's exit.
Dasburma, the Brahmagiri MLA, alleged that the Rs 1.76 lakh crore 2G spectrum scam, regarded as the biggest in the country, has exposed the corrupt ways of the Congress' top bosses. "The Murli Manohar Joshi-led PAC has found fault not only with the Prime Minister, but also with former telecom minister A Raja and the then finance minister P Chidambaram. All of them must have benefited from the loot," Dasburma said.
The BJD targeting its guns at Singh comes at a time when the Opposition Congress has been accusing the Naveen Patnaik government in the state of rampant corruption. During the past month, All India Congress Committee general secretary in-charge of Orissa Jagdish Tytler has upped the ante, charging Naveen of corruption in the rural employment guarantee scheme and the post sector.
Dubbing Union Minister of State for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh as anti-Orissa, Dasburma alleged that he has jeopardised the future of thousands of tribals and common people by objecting to industrial projects in Orissa, Mr.Dasburma alleged.

MASSIVE CHANGES IN BUREAUCRACY EFFECTED
Bhubaneswar: Odisha Government on Friday effects major reshuffle in IAS cadre. The state government on Friday shifted nine District Collectors and seven secretaries.
Malkangiri District Collector R Vineel Krishna whose abduction by Maoists in February sparked a nationwide outcry, was transferred and posted as director of Scheduled Tribe and Scheduled Caste Development department.
Kandhamal district collector Krishna Kumar was transferred and posted as the collector, Ganjam district. Ganjam collector V Kartikyan Pandian was transferred and posted as Private Secretary to the chief minister while Koraput district collector R P Patil was named as the new collector of Kandhamal district.
Others who were transferred and posted as collectors include- D V Swamy (Keonjhar), S Balwant (Malkangiri), Arabind Agarwal (Sambalpur), S P Mishra (Angul), R P Singh (Gajapati) and T S Ramachandra (Koraput).
The Panchayati Raj department secretary S N Tripathy was posted as the principal secretary in Rural Development department. RD secretary R L Jamuda was posted as the secretary of Agriculture department.
Energy secretary P K Jena was shifted to Panchayati Raj department along with his additional charge of secretary IT department. Chief minister's Private Secretary G Mathivathanan was posted as Secretary Energy department. Fisheries secretary S Sahu has been given additional charge of CMD, OMFED.
R P Saha was posted as secretary Excise department while CTM Suguna had been posted as secretary Labour and Employment. Sanjeev Chada has been posted as Director Horticulture department.

YC launches Jail Bharo; demands CM scalp

Thousands of youth Congress activists were taken into custody while they were launching a Jail Bharo agitation organised by the Odisha Pradesh Youth Congress (OPYC) on Thursday.
Demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for the large-scale irregularities in the implementation of MGNREGA, the OPYC had called for the agitation in Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts.
They also demanded action against those involved, including the arrest of Jharigam BDO, Rabindra Kanhar and other officials, in the alleged corruption in MGNREGA and staged a relay hunger strike outside the block office at Jharigham in Nabarangpur.
OPYC president and Nabarangpur MP Pradeep Majhi said that the Chief Minister was responsible for the bungling as he was the chief of the State monitoring cell of the scheme with huge central funds meant for the poor. He said the highest amount of Rs 11.23 crore was spent in Jharigaon block of Nabarangpur district in the last fiscal 2010-11, but very few tangible assets, created under the scheme, could be seen there. He alleged that Rs 7 crore out of the allotted amount had been misappropriated.
Quoting a report of the Comptroller Auditor General (CAG) of India and the National Institute of Rural Development, Hyderabad, Majhi said there was large scale misappropriation of funds to the tune of 88 per cent in Nabarangpur, Koraput, Malkangiri, Rayagada, and other districts of Odisha.

Corruption: BJD-Congress battle hots up
In a battle of one-upmanship, agitations launched by the youth wings of the BJD and the Congress over corruption issues have charged up the political atmosphere in the State.
The Orissa Pradesh Youth Congress (OPYC) organised a ‘jail bharo’ on Thursday in Koraput, Malkangiri and Nabarangpur districts demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik for the large-scale irregularities in the implementation of MGNREGS.
In retaliation, the Biju Yuva Janata Dal (BYJD) announced on Thursday that it will demonstrate in front of the Raj Bhavan on Friday demanding the resignation of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh over the 2G spectrum scam.
Alleging that the involvement of the chief minister in the MGNREGS scam cannot be ruled out, OPYC president Pradip Majhi alleged that irregularities in such a large-scale could not have continued throughout the State without the knowledge of the higher-ups.
The highest Rs 11.23 crore was spent in Jharigaon block of Nabarangpur district in 2010-11 but very few tangible assets, created under the scheme, could be seen there. He alleged that Rs 7 crore out of the allotted amount was misappropriated in the block.
Announcing the BYJD decision in a media conference here on Thursday, State convener Sanjay Dasburma said during the next ten days demonstrations and dharnas will be organised at all the district headquarters demanding the resignation of the prime minister over the 2G scam.
He said memoranda in this regard will be sent to the President from all BYJD district units.

Nabarangapur has recorded the lowest literacy rate, Census report.
The latest Census report 2011 reveals that the highest percentage of literates has been recorded in the district of Khordha (87.51 percent). And the lowest literacy rate is recorded in Nabarangapur (48.20 percent), said Director of Census Operations of Odisha, Bishnupada Sethi. He has found out that Nabarangapur has recorded the lowest literacy rate among both males (59.45 percent) and Females (37.22 percent).

Now the Lions organization have grown to over 1.3 million members in over 45,000 clubs. This organization provided a unique opportunity not only to serve those who need us but also to strengthen our own capabilities. He assured the club would work in coordination with the citizens of the community and district administration in future for successful implementation of its projects. Among others Chairman, Municipality, Nabrangpur, Prahalad Tripathy, Dr.K.D.Patnaik, spoke on the occasion. To celebrate their 25 years, the lioness Club of Nabarangpur released a special gift of silver Ganesh, and souvenir on the occasion. Nihar Ranjan Behera, read out the services of the club in the past years. Lions club organized several health camps, planted trees, conducted blood donation camps. Railway reservation at Umerkote soon

The East Coast Railway Division, will soon open a Passenger Reservation System (PRS) Counter at Umerkote in the district. After chalking out the details and study of demand from the train traffic the division has already initiated the materialization process, the division GM, Arvind Kumar Vohra, informed to the Nabarangpur, MP, Pradeep Majhi, vide letter no, CCM/44/PRS/Proposal/646 , that PRS facility has been sanctioned at Umerkote Post Office, and action has already been initiated for early commissioning of the system.
Expressing happiness over this step Mr. Majhi, said the long-time demand of the Umerkote, Chandahandi, Jharigam, and Raighar Block people would be met. He said the move will benefit as many as 5 lakh people of the five blocks of the district. The people of the area would not have to struggle for booking their railway tickets now.

Four Child Labours of Umerkote rescued from Koraput

Umerkote Police has rescued four numbers child labourers from the clause of labourer contractors in Koraput area while they were supplied to Hyderabad to work in a company on Saturday, Police has arrested accused contractors Krishna Biswas,Karuna Mani,Mohammed Goush and Mahammed Yunus.
Sources said that labour mafias are in active in rural pockets of the district to supply child labourers to other states. They have been engaged local unemployed youths to motivate poverty stricken, distress and hap less child labourers to go other states in quest of job. They commit to give good remuneration and other initiatives in reputed company in which poor families agree to send their children to other states in quest of job. Later, they humiliated and tortured the child labourers in other states. Hundreds of child labourers and other labourers have been migrated to other states.
On Friday, labour mediators Krishna Biswas and Karuna Mani, of UV-52 village under Umerkote, police station limit, along with two persons Mohammed Goush and Mahammed Yunus, who were belongs to Hyderabad motivated local poverty stricken childrens to generate high income in Hyderabad. They gave assurance to local child labourers to employ them in a reputed Company of Hyderabad.
It may be mentioned here that this year crop would fail due to scanty rainfall so the poor parents have forced to send their children to other states in quest of job. Other guardians have expressed that they have been deprived to get work under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme in which they are living in harassed condition so they have forced to send their children to other states for daily workers.

Meanwhile, police has informed the guardians to hand over their childrens.

What is the Jan Lokpal Bill, why it's important
A look at the salient features of Jan Lokpal Bill:
1. An institution called LOKPAL at the centre and LOKAYUKTA in each state will be set up
2. Like Supreme Court and Election Commission, they will be completely independent of the governments. No minister or bureaucrat will be able to influence their investigations.
3. Cases against corrupt people will not linger on for years anymore: Investigations in any case will have to be completed in one year. Trial should be completed in next one year so that the corrupt politician, officer or judge is sent to jail within two years.
4. The loss that a corrupt person caused to the government will be recovered at the time of conviction.
5. How will it help a common citizen: If any work of any citizen is not done in prescribed time in any government office, Lokpal will impose financial penalty on guilty officers, which will be given as compensation to the complainant.
6. So, you could approach Lokpal if your ration card or passport or voter card is not being made or if police is not registering your case or any other work is not being done in prescribed time. Lokpal will have to get it done in a month's time. You could also report any case of corruption to Lokpal like ration being siphoned off, poor quality roads been constructed or panchayat funds being siphoned off. Lokpal will have to complete its investigations in a year, trial will be over in next one year and the guilty will go to jail within two years.
7. But won't the government appoint corrupt and weak people as Lokpal members? That won't be possible because its members will be selected by judges, citizens and constitutional authorities and not by politicians, through a completely transparent and participatory process.
8. What if some officer in Lokpal becomes corrupt? The entire functioning of Lokpal/ Lokayukta will be completely transparent. Any complaint against any officer of Lokpal shall be investigated and the officer dismissed within two months.
9. What will happen to existing anti-corruption agencies? CVC, departmental vigilance and anti-corruption branch of CBI will be merged into Lokpal. Lokpal will have complete powers and machinery to independently investigate and prosecute any officer, judge or politician.
10. It will be the duty of the Lokpal to provide protection to those who are being victimized for raising their voice against corruption.

Mega Health Camp at Nabarangpur gets great response.
World Health day observed at Nabarangpur
To remark the occasion of world health day mega Health Camp which was organized for three day was extended upto Thursday. Organized by the the district administration and the Health Department, at the Nabarangpur Mondei Ground, Collector, Mr.Sibabrata Dash, was joined a the chief guest speaking to occasion he said that the role of ASH, and Anganwadi workers, are key in helping people to access essential health services at the village level. He requested all the ASHA and Anganwadi workers to perform their duties in their respective villages.
As many as 14,200, patients benefited from the Camp. All major pathological tests were conducted free of cost. After diagnosis of disease, the registered patients were also provided free consultation and medicines. The Mega health Camp was Inaugurated on Monday.
Doctors from seashore groups, Bhubaneswar, including specialists from Visakhapatnam, Koraput, took part in the health camp, Twenty paramedical staffs of Nabarangpur district participated and helped the physicians.
General Physicians, team of Orthopaedic Surgeon, Gynaecologist, ENT Specialist, Ophthalmologist, Cardiologist, Dermatologist, Dentist, Psychiatrist, Pediatrician, Oncologist & General Surgeon participated in the camp. Team of technicians that included Optometrist, Lab technicians & ECG technician along with GNM staffs worked hard to make the event a grand success. Banners, posters, loudspeakers were used to inform people about the camp.
A publicity drive was taken up in all slums of the district to attract people towards the camp. The district administration, local police, ASHA and Anganwadi workers extend their support to ensure proper conduct throughout the camp. Tricycles, wheelchairs, and hearing aids, were distributed. Among others CDMO, Jugal Kishor Behera, DPC SSA, Anand Jena, DPM NRHM,and ADMO, present.

Mega health camp inaugurated at Nabarangpur
Nabarangpur: A three-day-long mega health camp with 35 stalls and specialists from different hospitals was inaugurated by Collector Sibabrata Dash on Monday. It is an attempt to provide free modern healthcare to the poor living in different parts of Nabarangpur district and they should avail the benefit, Dash said. Among others, Zila Parishad president Bhagirathi Nayak and CDMO Jugal Kishor Behera attended the inaugural event. Although the programme was to be inaugurated by Nabarangpur MP Pradeep Majhi with Science & IT Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi as the chief guest, both were conspicuous by their absence. Taking to this newspaper, Majhi expressed his concern over the “several irregularities” in the arrangement of the health camp.

More than 200 people affected due to food poisoning in Raighar.
In a shocking development, around 200 peoples of Gurishinga-I, Budrapara, villages under Raighar block region were under going treatment owing to food poisoning on Saturday night. The health officials stated that more than 200 were kept under observations. As per villagers, they were fed Prasad (bhogo) during the Satnarayan Puja held at the houses of Susanta Roy, of Village Gurusingha-I and Pravat Sardhar, of Budrapara, in the night of Saturday. In the middle of the night, some people complained of symptoms like stomachache, nausea and diarrhea. In the morning the Anganwadi workers, and local sarpanchs informed the matter to the Righar PHC, and CDMO, Nabarangpur. A team of para medical staffs including three Doctors, Dr.Himansu Mishra, Dr.Khirod Chandra Sahu, and Dr.Susant Kumar Sethy, rushed to the effected villages as per the direction of CDMO, Jugal Kishor Behera. After medical examination, the health officials shifted 11 persons with severe condition to the Raighar PHC.
CDMO, Jugal Kishor Behera, said everything is under control now. Condition of the people admitted to the hospital is stable. Our medical teams are camping in the villages where the remaining peoples are undergoing treatment.
Cuttack lifts the Sahani Cup Final.
Cuttack lifted the prestigious Sahani Cup-2011 by beating Balasore 1-0 goal in final match in the inter district senior sahani Cup Football tournament held in Nabarangpur stadium on Sunday.Sudhansu Sekhar Roy, scored the goal within 71 minute.
Science and IT, Minister, Ramesh Chandra Majhi, Local MP, Pradeep Majhi, Collector, Sibabrata Dash, and Superintend of police Mr.Niti Sekhar, Local MLA, Manohar Randhari, Orissa Olympic Association Secretary, Ashirbad Behera, , Orissa Football Association, Vice-President, and Secretary district athletic association, Mr.Prahalad Tripathy,attended the award ceremony.

In the meeting Collector, Sri.Sibabrata Dash, as the chief guest,while addressing a press conference DDM, of NABARD, Mr. Vijaya Dora, highlighted the various important achievements said that NABARD is committed and involved in the efforts to bring about the rural prosperity through effective credit support, institutional development and other innovative initiatives.
He revealed that NABARD has launched a Terracotta Cluster in the Tandaguda village of Papadahandi block in Nabarangpur, on 2nd July 2008. The focus was to utlize the traditional pottery skills for diversifying into artistic products of Terracotta. The programme is successfully being carried out. Regularly skill development and design development programmes are conducted by NABARD
To upgrade the skills and compete in the regular and emerging new markets.
Now through training and other support 105 of pottery families are in a position to supplement their incomes through a distinct brand name Tangdaguda Terracotta.
During the Mondei-2010 in Nabarangpur, Tandaguda Cluster has also bagged the first prize in recorded highest sales. In the Cluster Devlopment committee headed by the Collector, PDDRDA,AGM- NABARD, Chief Manager Lead bank, General Manager, DIC, BDO, Papadahandi, Branch Manager, Papadahandi and the NGO, Kalaniketan are the members reviews the progress of the cluster in every quarter.
NABARD adopted village in Papadahandi block under the village development programme,(VDP) as focus village in the year 2009, to focus on overall development of the village by concentrating the various NABARD and govt. schemes in the village to achieve economic, infrastructure, social and human development, education, health, sanitation, drinking water supply, formation of SHG, farmers club, producers group, watershed development activities, accumulation of micro enterprises, bank linkages, accretion relationship with different govt departments, socio-economic development for the local youth, women and children, propagate different govt scheme, market linkages for rural products and craft products and value chain management.
Though NABARD as frontrunner organization working relentlessly for promoting sustainable and equtable agriculture, rural development and other innovative initiatives, has lunched a unique three year programme of promoting sustem of rice intensification (SRI) in two blocks, Papadahandi and Kosagumuda of Nabarangpur district this year. A total of 377 farmers in 16 vilalges of the blocks are benefited form the programme.
NABARD has envisaged a new instrument to reach the land less farmers who were not able to get credit from banks as they do not own any land. This includes tenant farmers, oral lessess, sharp-croppers and those tribals who are using land given by forest department, but do not have title to the land.
Besides the programmes in Dabugam for Dhokra craft, of skill up gradation,Grass level training programmes were conducted in Umerkote and Papadahandi blocks, for Rural Infrastructure Fund,(RIDF) 24 crores loan has been given to the state govt. departments for Rural connectivity and 10 crores for irrigation since 2006. 97 lakhs were sanctioned under RIDF loan for irrigation in Nabarangpur. Mr. Dora thanks to the NGOs of district Kalaniketan, IWDS,SAHARA,READ,OPDSC,IAEET,SANKALP,NDSWAG,PRAYAS, AND HLES, who have partnered with NABARD in the efforts to do something extraordinary in the district. Nabarangpur: In the nail biting semifinal Balasore defeated Angul 1-0 and entered the final of the Sahani Cup Senior Inter Districts Football Tournament at Nabaragpur Stadium here on Friday. Jeypore AIR staff dharna seeks due remuneration

Expressing strong discontentment against the alleged apathetic attitude of the Jeypore All India Radio (AIR) authorities, the musicians embarked on a token dharna on Thursday here under the banner of AIR Artistes’ Association led by its secretary and senior tablist Sushanta Adhikari demanding payment of equal remunerations to the singers and musicians.
The artistes, including the local singers and musicians, alleged that they have been deprived of getting remunerations as per the guidelines of the AIR.
There is no difference of remuneration between a singer and a musician, but the AIR authorities are not disbursing equal remuneration to the artistes and co-musicians, alleged Adhikari.

Expressing strong discontentment against the alleged apathetic attitude of the Jeypore All India Radio (AIR) authorities, the musicians embarked on a token dharna on Thursday here under the banner of AIR Artistes’ Association led by its secretary and senior tablist Sushanta Adhikari demanding payment of equal remunerations to the singers and musicians.
The artistes, including the local singers and musicians, alleged that they have been deprived of getting remunerations as per the guidelines of the AIR.
There is no difference of remuneration between a singer and a musician, but the AIR authorities are not disbursing equal remuneration to the artistes and co-musicians, alleged Adhikari.

Sahani Cup football tournament kick-starts

Baba Remdev visited Nabarangpur.
Noted Yoga and spiritual guru Baba Ramdev visited Nabarangpur on Tuesday as part of his first phase of Bharat Swabhiman Yatra which he started on September 2 last year to create awareness on eradicating social evils and corruption. A yoga camp and public meeting was held at Mondei ground. He also created awareness on the fact that Yoga helped total health a
nd preventing stress, and diseases. He gave a motivating speech focusing on the problems Bharat is facing which might lead to huge problems in near future if proper action is not taken quickly.
He said Odisha is minerally rich state nearly 10 lakh crores Iron, Coal, Buxite, and other minerals are available, but the Centre is not giving proper royalty to the State.
He recommended that every one should go for yoga exercises, start along with providing some little time towards the yoga so that one can remedy his diseases such as Heart attack, kidney problem, asthma, obesity, constipation, cancer and more. Swami would visit Jeypore On March 9.

The district administration with Municipality Nabarangpur decided to make the day special for the women’s of the district. The SHGs, Teachers, students, and lecturers of college, local women’s participated in different competitions held at the Stadium.
They ran races balancing potato on spoons held in their mouths. The musical chairs, tug of war, Mehandi, Kabadi, perfect lady, miss, and mrs Nabarangpur, vanity beg competition drew much cheer and applaud. Collector, Siba Brata Dash, was the chief guest, while PDDRDA, Dhruba Charana Panchbhaya, Nabarangpur MLA, Monahar Randhari, Chairman of Municipality, Prahalad Tripathy, Executive Officer, S.N. Nabarangpur Scribes' body demands development of Nabarangpur, meets CM.
The delegates asserted that even after 18 years of its creation as a new district, carved out of undivided Koraput district on October 2, 1992, by the then Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, state apathy still rules the roost over the undivided Koraput.
THE DELEGATES of District Journalist’s Action Committee (DJAC) met the Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik and drew his attention to the utter neglect of the tribal-dominated Nabrangpur district and demanded its overall development. In the meeting and discussions held at the office of the chief minister, those who were present included Basant Rath, Banka Bihari Bissoy, Gouri Sankar Tripathy, Nikunja Patnaik, Jeetendra Kanungo, Ramesh Majhi. The meeting also included Nabarangpur MLA Manohar Randhari, Film Development Corporation, Chairman, Muna Khan.
The delegates asserted that even after 18 years of its creation as a new district, carved out of undivided Koraput district on October 2, 1992, by the then Chief Minister Biju Patnaik, state apathy still rules the roost over the undivided Koraput district that had been crafted out of Visakhapatnam and annexed to Utkal Pradesh.
They asserted that the district has remained most backward in the field of female literacy with the literacy rate standing at mere 15 percent and female literacy in higher education has fallen to 5 percent with more than 73 percent of total population below poverty line and the poor parents are incapable of meeting their Childs education expenses in the colleges. This year near about 4000 HSC passed out students (SC,ST, & OBC) were deprived of higher education due to non-available seats and lack of technical educations in the colleges of this district, for which resentment among the students is growing.
Besides, increasing the seats in the colleges of district, the DJAC demanded setting up of a Government College and Polytechnic College at Nabarangpur and Umerkote, A.N.M and G.A.N.M training centres, a B.Ed college, and a full-fledged DIET, with I.T.I in each block.
The delegation also informed the CM that due to the dearth of specialists at District Headquarters Hospital, (DHH),CHCs and PHCs, most of the tribals in the remote area mainly depend on quacks and those who sell indigenous medicines.
The team demanded sufficient doctors with specialists should be posted and atleast a medical college or a high-tech medical college to be established in the undivided Koraput district i.e. Nabarangpur, Rayagada, Malkangiri, and Koraput. It is pertinent that this area does not have a good hospital and the health care centres languish due to absence of doctors or non-fulfillment of vacancies due to the poor medical services in the area the main reason behind high mortality rate among tribals.
The team of journalists also said that most of the people depended on health care services and hospitals in nighbouring Andhra Pradesh, consequent to this the neighbouring states earned hundreds crores per year from the patients of undivided Koraput.
The agricultural sector has been neglected with most of the posts lying vacant in the department. Despite being one of the largest maize and sugarcane growing districts in the state, a maize processing unit and sugar factory are yet to be set up while the farmers are deprived of adequate irrigation facalities.
There farmers need to be imparted training and a soil testing unit to be setup. One cold storage in each block supported by proper market yards is also the need of the hour. The Turi-Guntat, Tel, Lower Bhaskal, irrigation project and more lift irrigation points should also be taken up, demanded the delegation.
Despite being Asia’s biggest hydro-electric project the adjoining villages of the Upper Indravati Hydro Electrical project side are still awaiting electrification let alone the remote pockets, they also complained.
Normally in hydro-electricity projects, the water flowing through the powerhouse is re-diverted to the main river, so that river remains alive. But in the case of Upper Indravati Project the vast and deep reservoir is being created to divert the entire water through tunnel to the Powerhouse, so that the trail water is diverted to Hati river for irrigation purpose is in Kalahandi district instead. Thus the Upper Indravati proves to be a boon to Kalahandi and great curse to the host district drying up the rivers and greatly hampering the cultivation and agricultural production here, the Chief Minister was told.
The DJAC has sought justice from the State by diverting some water of the dam-reservoir to the Lower Indravati and save the hapless farmers there. Moreover, though built at the cost of the neglected district here, no amount of the revenue generated by the project is being utlised for the peripheral development, the journalists asserted.
The development of eco-friendly industrialisation and tourism still remains a distant dream. In an age of space-crafts where globe-trotting has become a day-to-day affair elsewhere, the people of the area are yet to board a train. The rail connection can be developed from Kesinga to Jeypore via Nabarangpur, Titlagada junction to (Chhattisgharh), via Chandahandi, Umerkote, Nabarangpur, to Jeypore, and Dhamtari (Chhattisgharh) to Jeypore via Umerkote and Nabarangpur and an alternative direct access to Gopalpur and Visikhapatnam ports from Raipur and other mining regions in adjacent Chhattisgarh.
Tourism is considered as the fastest growing industry and government should work on developing the industry in the area, the area scribes demanded. Nabarangpur, the part of undivided Koraput is rightly called as paradise unexplored, though endowed with immense natural wealth, unique cultural heritage, magical beauty and bewildering diversity. However the state government is yet to wake up to its enormous tourism prospects and tap them in a sustainable manner.
The government must tap the enormous tourism prospect in a sustainable manner. Though there are many places in the district which could be designated as natural and cultural heritage sites, the Government has neither initiated any action either to protect or popularise the sites for tourism nor wide spread dissemination of information is being initiated.
The historic places like Podagada, Jagannathpur are of religious significance like Papadahandi, Kelia, Parua, Chatahandi, Ghumar, Garbharai, Chandandhara, can be developed and create extensive self-employment through trade, commerce and hospitality industry, it was stated.
Besides, a comprehensive network of roads communication including extension and creation of new state high ways and national high-ways be undertaken.
In addition, sports institutes and hostels, especially for the tribal youth of this district need to be established. The rapid deforestation in the district has gravely affected the common man and lack of alternative fuel system has aggravated the situation.
Moreover, the supply of cooking gas in the district is meager while the black marketers of cooking gas and Kerosene are raking in moolah. The DJAC has therefore urged the CM, to allot more cooking gas agencies and save the remaining forest coverage.
The delegation also stated that the rate of urbanisation has actually diminished the cultivable land area and devastated the eco-system. This needs to be checked and saved before time runs out. This district has great potential for biotechnology, especially for agricultural biotechnology, herbal biotechnology and medicinal bio technology. The government should encourage industrial houses to establish industries in this backward region by granting a special tax benefit for the desirous industrialists to establish small and medium industries.
The government should also take necessary steps to establish a district judge court and family court at Nabarangpur. Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) courts at Dabugam and Kodinga and also a bench of Highcourt, the delegation demanded.
After 1980, no survey and settlement operation has been carried out in the district, said the delegation, more than 80,000 persons spread over more than 500 villages situated mainly on hill-tops in the deep forest in the district are leading a very pathetic life due to delay in survey and settlement. Near about 300 villages are identified but not recognised as revenue village by the government. The tribals are thus not being covered by any of the anti-poverty schemes, alleged the delegation. Hence it is indispensable for the benefit of the tribals of this district, that the government should direct for survey and settlement operation in the district.
Lastly sight of traffic jams are routine in Nabarangpur town, crammed streets, lack of parking space increasing number of heavy vehicles on the NH 201 (Boriguma to Barghar road) passing through the area street junctions have turned into potential danger stops. The delegation has asked the government to construct a by-pass road at Nabarangpur from Dibhata to Majhiguda.
The DJAC had submitted a memorandum addressed to the Chief Minister through the Collector, Sibabrata Dash on December 21 and also convened a coordination meeting on January 2nd and January 8. It had invited Science and IT Minister, Ramesh Chandra Majhi; MP, Pradeep Majhi; MLAs, Monohar Randhari, Bhujabala Majhi, Jagabandhu Majhi; ZP President, Bhagirathi Nayak; OFDC, Chairman, Munna Khan; Bhudan Jagya Samiti; Chairman, Jayadev Parida; Collector, Sibabrata Dash, and SP, Niti Kumar.

Two teachers suspended in sub-standard Dal case
Report by Basant Rath; Nabarangpur: Two teachers of Gadia Street UP School, including headmistress, G.Vijaya Laxmi, and assistant teacher Indra Mohapatro, suspended while they were kept sub-standard MDM Dal, in the school on Saturday.
After receiving a complaint from the people and media persons, Collector, Sibabrata Dash, visited the school and found that there is sub-standard MDM, dal, cooking for the students he asked the teachers about the supply of dal the teachers told that they purchased the dal from the market.
After knowing the fact collector directed the DI, Kailash Panda, to suspend both the teachers and asked for the explanation from the CRCC, Padmabala Patnaik, and BRCC, Banamali Patnaik. In the school only six to seven students are coming, hence the collector directed to merge the school to Gouda Street school which is within 500 meters.

To keep a check on the implementation of various Centrally-sponsored schemes, a meeting of the District Vigilance Monitoring Committee of the Congress was held under the chairmanship of local Congress MP Pradeep Majhi on Wednesday.
District Collector Sibabrata Dash, PD, DRDA, Dhruba Charana Panchbhaya, Executive Engineers of RD, RWSS, SOUTHCO, AEs of PWD, MI and LI and other district officers, besides members of the committee,were present.
Detailed discussions on the various Centrally-sponsored schemes like the NREGA, IAY, Mo Kudia, SGSY, RGGVY and PMGSY, works of PWD, IAY and Old Age Pension were held.
Committee members alleged that large-scale corruption and irregularities in the implementation of the programme under NREGA at Jharigam.
They also complained that massive corruptions were found in repair of office room, staff quarters, construction and improvement of roads. The people who have job cards are not being provided work. The members also raised the issue of fake job cards. The members also pointed out that there are cases of delay in payments under the NREGA.
Nabarangpur MLA Monahar Randhari and Umerkote MLA Jagabandhu Majhi and Prmod Padhy, representative of IT Minister Ramesh Majhi, alleged that only at the instance of the MP this meeting was held. They also alleged that non-members of the committee are going to blocks and asking questions to the officials. They threatened to form a BJD committee. The Collector assured the MLAs to sort out the issue MP Majhi said, “While the State and Central Governments have launched several schemes for welfare of economically weaker sections of the society, we have to ensure that the deserving people get the benefits from the schemes. The District Vigilance Monitoring Committees have been set up with the purpose to see whether the schemes are running successfully and deserving people are getting the benefits.” The MP sought the details of the schemes so that they can be monitored.

Nabarangpur College Union Function held.

The Nabarangpur College observed its annual function on Thursday, Gracing as chief guest, IT, Science and Technology, Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi, said that education is fundamental right of the citizen, it is unfortunate that this year more 4000 students deprived from higher education. This year the college should submit reports to increase the seats before the high power committee, so that more seats will be allotted to this college. Though it is one of the oldest college of the district, yet to be Government College, The Journalists action Committee,of Nabarangpur district also submitted memorandum and concerned over the issue they will also talk with the Chief minister, Naveen Patnaik, he added. Mr.Majhi also suggested that the governing body meeting should be called and to take appropriate steps to increase seats, and other development of the college.
Municipal Chairman, Prahalad Tripathy, State Student BJD, President, Ranjeet Mohapatra, were present at the function as guest. They addressed a large gathering of students and lecturers, Mr.Mohapatra advised the students to be self confident while undertaking any task, while Mr.Tripathy highlighted the importance an alma mater in a persons life. College Principal, RK Patnaik, described the different development programmes of the college, while Dr.Bijaya Mishra, introduced the guests.
Winners of different competitions, held by the union earlier, were given away prizes. While union president Hari Sankar Sahu, presided over the meeting, Secretary, Papun Mishra, read over the reports of the student union. Plus Two Cultural secretary, also read over the reports. With other lecturers and employees contributed to the grand success of thefunction. Among others, dramatic association secretary, Literary secretary, were preset at the meeting. Students of the college enthralled the audience with song and music programmes.

Nabarangpur: Rich tributes were paid to Assam Rifles Saheed Pramod Naik by the locals here on Tuesday. Naik was killed by People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of Manipur on Friday during the operation near Khamdong village in Ukhrul district border to the Myanmar. The body was carried out in a procession through the main road of the town followed by a motorcycle rally. It was later taken to his native village Ghatguda near Papadahandi and performed the last rite with full Guard of honour. District Collector Sibabrata Dash, SP Nitin Sekhar along with other district officials and eminent persons were present. Saheed Naik was about 28 and survived by his wife and a daughter. Earlier the body was flown into the Imphal and accorded full military honour. After arriving at Bhubaneswar, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had paid floral tribute

A meeting of the Journalists’ Action Committee was held at the circuit house conference hall here. Science, Technology and IT Minister Ramesh Chandra Majhi, Collector Sibabrata Das, Dabugam MLA Bhujabala Majhi, ZP President Bhagirathi Nayak, MP representative Narayan Patro, Nabarangpur MLA representative Rabi Patnaik, Municipality Chairman Prahalad Tripathy and the scribes from the district attended the meeting.
The speakers underscored that the people’s representatives should seriously take up the cause of the district lagging behind on different fronts. Though the district produces electricity, ironically it is not for the people of the district.
Higher education in this tribal-dominated district remains one of the most backward in the State as more than 4,000 students are being deprived of higher education.
Collector Sibabrata Dash said that the demands of the scribes are genuine. He informed that for the development of tourism in the district, a rope way at Ghumar, boat facilities at Kusumjhar and renovation of Hirli hill will be taken up soon while a polytechnic college at the old sub-divisional hospital and one ITI at Indravati will start from this session.
Minister Majhi said that there is a need for the improvement in railway network in the district. It was also decided that a committee consisting of all MLAs, MP, ZP president and scribes will meet the Chief Minister and Rajya Sabha member Pyarimohan Mahapatra and also Railways Minister Mamata Banarjee soon.

Diarrhoea caimed 3 lives in Jharigam.

Diarrhoea has claimed three lives and 13 affected in the Purla village under Jharigam block. The deceased has been identified as eight -year-old boy Phula Bhatra, Manindra Bhatra, 10, Manbodh Bhatra, 12.
Among the affected persons Sansai Bhatra, 10, Laxman Bhatra, 12, Asai Bhatra, 10, Mudi Bhatra,40, Padu Bhatra, 40, Gaibari Bhatra, 12, Sadu Bhatra, 38, Bhima Bhatra, 20, Subhundra Bhatra, 3, Sakuntla Bhatra, 2, and several other persons were admitted in the area hospital of Umerkote, On Tuesday morning the local Asha worker visited the village and tried to intimate the matter to the doctor of Jharigam CHC, but the doctor was not present, so he intimated to BDO, Jharigam. In the meanwhile pharmacist of the CHC was attended the patients and three died, and several referred to Umerkote hospital. The villagers alleged that due to the negligence of the doctor, and health officials the outbreak took place. At the evening a Mobile health vehicle, reached at the village.
CDMO, Jugal Kishor Behera, said that we are taking necessary pre-cautionary measures and the situation was now under control in the worst-affected village. Due to food poison the outbreak took place he added.In the meanwhile Collector, Sibabrata Dash, visited the affected village, discussed with villagers and health workers to take pre-cautionary measures.

Youth Cong slams State Govt for raw deal to farmers

Intensifying its fasting agitation demanding loan waiver for the rain-hit farmers, Orissa Pradesh Youth Congress (OPYC) asked its district units to start relay hunger strikes from Monday even as six of its workers were shifted to hospital as their condition deteriorated.
The hunger strike led by OPYC president and MP Pradeep Majhi, entered the fourth day on the New Year's day as the state government remained silent.
"As the state government was yet to respond to our demands, OPYC had asked its district units to launch relay hunger strikes in district level," Majhi said adding that the agitation could be extended up to block and panchayat levels if the state government did not announce loan waiver upto Rs 50,000 for the small and marginal farmers.
Besides demanding loan waiver, OPYC had launched its hunger strike on December 30 seeking enhancement of compensation for the affected farmers, inclusion of seven coastal districts in the list of affected areas, crop insurance to peasants and other benefits.
The ruling BJD had asked OPYC to shift its hunger strike agitation to Delhi accusing the centre of neglecting the state.The hunger strike led by OPYC president and MP Pradeep Majhi in the state capital entered its fourth day today as the state government remained silent on their demand.
"Relay hunger strike will start at district level from tomorrow as the government is yet to respond to our demands," Majhi told, adding the agitation could be extended up to blocks and panchayats if the government fails to announce loan waiver upto Rs 50,000 for small and marginal farmers.

Crop damage due to unseasonal rain extenstive....Central team

BHUBANESWAR: The extent of damage to paddy crop due to unseasonal rainfall has been termed as "extensive", by a central team visiting the state. The team said it would soon submit its reports even as chief minister Naveen Patnaik estimated the loss at around Rs 6,000 crore.
"The crop loss due to unseasonal rain in December is extensive as well as substantial. We will submit our report to the Centre shortly," Pankaj Kumar, joint secretary in the union agriculture ministry, who is heading the team told reporters after meeting the chief minister and other senior officials here.
Stating that damage of paddy crop was huge in all the eight districts the team visited, Kumar said the central assistance would be fixed on the basis of their report.
Replying to a question on the extent of crop damage in coastal districts which did not figure in the list of the state government's momorandum to the Centre, Kumar said as per the assessment of the team most farmers in the state have been affected.
On the state government's demand for relaxation of the FAQ (fair average quality) of paddy, Kumar said "the central government will soon take a decision in this regard."
Replying to another question relating to the state government's alleged negligence by the centre, Kumar said that the central team's report on the drought situation was also under the process.
Meanwhile, chief minister Naveen Patnaik said "he was optimistic on early release of central assistance for the suferring farmers hit by the unseasonal rain in the state."
